ENGLISH 10

Language Arts 10 is now a government examinable course. All students MUST write this exam. Students will complete one novel study, a poetry section, a short story section, a Shakespeare section, a midterm exam and a Writing Skills booklet. The course will focus on improving students’ writing abilities. For further information about this course, please access our Course Description Booklet.

FOUNDATIONS OF MATH & PRE-CALCULUS 10

it is presented in a series of video lessons in eight course modules, with students completing practice questions and self-marking worksheets. Students will: 1. View lessons 2. Complete and SELF-MARK questions related to the lesson 3. Complete and SELF-MARK a Practice Quiz at the end of each module. 4. Send in a Submission page at the end of each completed module (worth 20% of your module mark). Teacher will provide ‘feedback’ on this work. At least 11/20 must be obtained before access to online quiz is permitted. 5. Complete the ONLINE MODULE QUIZ (worth 80% of your module mark) Topics to be covered include metric and imperial measurement involving surface area and volume of 3D objects, trigonometry, factors and roots of whole numbers, irrational numbers, powers with integral and rational exponents, multiplying and factoring polynomial expressions, interpreting graphs, linear relations and functions, graphing, determining equations, function notation, and systems of equations. Teacher is available to assist students via phone or online during regular office hours. This course is presented in a series of online lessons covering all required topics for this course.

ENGLISH 11

English 11 integrates reading, writing, mechanics, listening, and oral response in each unit.  Readings include a variety of writing styles and genres.  Writing is focused on personal response while adhering to specific rules of a variety of writing styles.  One novel is studied (students choose one novel to read from a list of five).  Essays are incorporated into each unit based on previous work in the course.  Macbeth is the Shakespearean play studied using a variety of materials to enhance understanding and to make the reading of the play easier.  A few oral readings/recordings are required to meet the oral response component of the learning outcomes.

CHEMISTRY 11

Chemistry 11 gives students a broad view of chemistry topics, including atoms and moles, chemical reactions, atomic theory, solutions and organic chemistry.  This is a good preparation for future chemistry courses. Students work through on-line lessons in eight units.  There is at least one assignment for each unit and each unit has a test.  There is a cumulative final exam. The lessons consist of recorded instructions, on-line notes, assignments, and videos. Pre-requisite:  Science 10, Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-calculus 10.  Co-requisite:  Foundations of Mathematics 11 or Pre-calculus 11

PHYSICS 11

Physics 11 is a self-paced course that will provide students with the basic knowledge and skills needed for the study of Physics. There is no text book as the course material is all online. Students will examine how waves work, learn about optics with mirrors and lenses, as well as kinematics, the dynamics of motion and finally, energy. Students should have a basic understanding of mathematics and be able to manipulate equations, create graphs and find their slope. The course assignments include guided lessons, self-check quizzes, problem solving assignments, unit tests, video assignments and midterm and final exams.

PRE-CALCULUS 11

NO TEXTBOOK REQUIRED. This is a self-paced course delivered via animated video series. This course is a part of the pathway designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary studies in programs that do require the study of theoretical calculus. Topics covered include: Algebra and Number – absolute value, radicals and radical expressions, rational Expressions (permissible and non-permissible values, operations, simplify); Trigonometry – primary trigonometric ratios, sine law and cosine law; Relations and Functions – polynomial factoring, absolute value graphs, quadratic functions (standard form, general form, characteristics), quadratic equations, systems of linear–quadratic and quadratic-quadratic equations, linear and quadratic inequalities, arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, reciprocal linear and quadratic functions.  Prerequisite: Foundations of Math or Pre-Calculus 10.
